Compost Co-Lab: New Site Launch & Community Science in Action

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of the newest site for our Compost Co-Lab, a collaborative effort with Movement in Thyme, Glasgow Autonomous Space, Propagate Scotland, and Propagate Cat.

At our recent event in March, community members came together to explore the world of compost through hands-on activities, including viewing compost samples under microscopes. It was a chance to uncover the hidden ecosystem of organisms within our compost.

Together, we learned practical ways to engage in citizen science, using simple techniques to test and monitor the compost we’re creating collectively. During the event, we explored the path ahead for the Compost Co-Lab, focusing on how individuals, households, and community groups can play an active role in contributing food waste. We discussed practical ways to build local composting systems that not only reduce waste but create a valuable resource for growing food, supporting biodiversity, and strengthening community resilience.

The Compost Co-Lab is part of our “Small Actions, Big Impact” initiative, which transforms household and community meal waste into nutrient-rich compost. This compost not only supports local growing efforts and biodiversity, but also contributes to broader goals, such as cultivating herbs used in herbal medical supplies for refugee camps in Calais.
