The Tree Co-Lab brings together residents, schools, and local organisations in Govan to explore how trees support biodiversity, manage water, and nurture wellbeing. This project is one of GALLANT’s community science initiatives. It uses citizen science to investigate the links between urban trees, climate resilience, and everyday life.
We’re working with groups across Govan to:
- Map local trees: measuring species, height, and health, while also recording personal stories and seasonal changes.
- Install water butts: to track rainfall, support climate literacy, and reuse water for community gardens.
- Co-produce knowledge: on how tree planting and care can reduce flood risk, especially in areas vulnerable to frequent or long-term flooding (perma-flooding).
- Connect people and place: through community walks, interactive app-based tools (via CommuniMap), and hands-on training for “tree guardians”.
- Support learning and reflection: through collaboration with local schools and organisations like Glasgow Science Centre, Sunny Govan, and The Conservation Volunteers.
This work grows from community interest in biodiversity, nature connection, and urban greening. It’s part of a wider movement to reshape the future of Glasgow’s green spaces. Local voices are leading the way.
You can follow this project and get involved through the Tree Co-Lab layer on the CommuniMap app. Residents can upload observations, share reflections, and add to a growing picture of life with trees in Govan.

Once CommuniMap launches it will be open to anyone in Glasgow who wants to help shape a more accessible, climate-friendly city.
