This project responds to local concerns about waste, emissions, and access to composting in areas where traditional food waste services are inconsistent or unavailable.
In the Composting Co-Lab, we’re exploring how communities can take the lead on composting and rethink organic waste as a shared resource. Through this project, we’re co-developing and testing locally appropriate solutions for collecting, processing, and learning from food and garden waste.
Together with residents, we’re asking:
- What barriers stop people from composting?
- What kinds of composting systems could work in dense urban areas?
- How can composting spark wider conversations about waste, sustainability, and justice?
Contributions via the CommuniMap app help us map composting practices across the area, and share tips, issues, and ideas. This collective knowledge supports more coordinated, accessible composting in future — and helps highlight how everyday actions can contribute to climate resilience.
We also continue to explore how physical infrastructure (like compost hubs) can sit alongside digital engagement, and how local groups might take forward the work.

Once CommuniMap launches it will be open to anyone in Glasgow who wants to help shape a more accessible, climate-friendly city.
