I Danced A Tree

Written by: Colin Colognori Thomson

This prose poem is a supplementary piece to a short story of the same title.

I saw a tree – it saw me back – through unknowable vision you saw me whole, you saw me true, you saw me walk the path to you. I never looked back. I never doubted my way. I held your gaze in the light of day. As dusk came upon us I reflected upon you. You’d taught me sight from a deeper place…one which could only give me grace.

I heard a tree – its calling mesmerising me. A transcendent voice gave me no choice. To catch your whisper, to catch your sigh, to catch you singing me an earthly lullaby. Keep singing your songs so I even hear you when alone. I will know it’s you from your unique tone. The birds join on your branches high…but then all’s clear when they have flown.

I touched a tree – so solid I knew you’d be. A gift of texture, a gift of softness, a gift bestowed to me of solace. You give me shelter under your broad leaves. Each branch you grow forms a shape that beautifully weaves. You know when I’m in need to touch your hand, to feel your comfort when I’m upon your land. You possess such grounded presence, my being rests assured as I connect to truth, and meaning and above all my essence!

I danced a tree…I danced a tree – it danced me! I danced a tree, I danced a tree…. what can this dance be. A dance of life, a dance of breathing, a dance of perpetual meaning. What more can be said of this connection…most certainly to find your way along your road in your right direction. It tells a tale, it tells a story …it tells the way to joy and the heart’s true glory.
